Service is the oft-neglected note of the triad containing teaching, research, and service. As a trained social scientist with a background in civic engagement, higher education, and urban planning, I find the call of service to be paramount in my work: I view research and teaching as a means to an end, the end being the development of community fabrics, thoughtful civic engagement, and democratic empowerment. That said, my service activities have included letter writing, door knocking, and working as a precinct official on Election Day. I also take my role as a first-generation graduate student leader seriously – serving as the chair of the graduate student advisory board in my college, being an active member of the graduate student worker union. Below are just a few of the service activities that I participate in and find to be central to my mission as a scholar:
Durham County Precinct Official
NCSU CED Graduate Student Advisory Board
NCSU First-Gen Grad Student Organization
